Cooker Hood Buying Guide
Cooker hoods are essential appliances in any kitchen, and it is important that you know exactly what you’re looking for when you’re in the market for a new extractor fan. So, we’ve put together a useful buying guide to help you figure out which cooker hood will best suit your kitchen space.
Ducted Vs Recirculating
When you purchase your new cooker hood, you have two options. The first option is to duct your cooker hood, which means mounting in on an external wall to allow smoke and odours to filter outside. You can also choose to have a recirculation cooker hood, which can be fitted on external walls.
To install a ducted cooker hood, you may require the assistance of a professional to drill the external hole required. So, a recirculation cooker hood may be the more cost-effective option in the short-term, but their filters must be replaced every six months which can add up over time.
What Is the Correct Recirculation Rate For My Cooker Hood?
In addition to measuring the space above your cooker to ensure that your cooker hood will fit, you may also want to take some measurements of the room to ensure that you purchase a cooker hood with the corrector extraction rate.
The extraction rate refers to how quickly your cooker hood can filter the air in your kitchen. The ideal extraction rate should be able to change the air in your kitchen 8 to 12 times per hour. So, take your room’s measurements and multiply it by 12. A kitchen measuring 4m x 4m x 3m would need an extraction rate of 576m3/hr, and an extractor fan like the SIA CP91SS 90cm cooker hood would be ideal.
How Noisy Are Cooker Hoods?
The higher the extraction rate, the noisier your cooker hood will be. This is an important consideration for many households because the noise from a cooker hood can be quite intrusive. If this is a major concern, you may want to invest in a cooker hood with a lower extraction rate.
Another useful tip is to use your cooker hood on the lowest setting and start running it before you begin cooking. Leave it on for another 10 minutes after you’re finished cooking, and you can go through the entire process without having to shout over the noise of your cooker hood.
