When your cooker hood is fitted with recirculating or ducted installation, it will have a grease filter that needs cleaning from time to time. It is important that you give it a good wash very few weeks to ensure that your cooker hood continues to filter the air in your kitchen efficiently and prevent damage to the overall appliance.

  1. Switch off the appliance before you start.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for any products that should not be used while cleaning.
  3. Remove the grease filter. You can clean it while it is still attached to the hood, but you will get a more thorough clean from removing it. View this diagram from a CDA manual for an idea of how to remove the filter.
  4. Create a mixture using hot water and baking soda. You can also use a kitchen cleaning product that is designed for stainless steel, such as Cif.
  5. Test your mixture on a corner of the appliance to ensure that it does the job effectively and that it does not damage the steel.
  6. Wash the entire filter with a cloth soaked in your cleaning mixture.
  7. For particularly stubborn spots, use toothbrush or scouring pad to scrub away the grease.
  8. If you have a recirculating filter, remember that the charcoal filter cannot be cleaned. If you find that your cooker hood is no longer eliminating odours, replace the filters. At Ship It Appliances, we sell charcoal filters for all of the cooker hood models we have in stock.
  9. Be sure to repeat this every week or two weeks. A build-up of grease is a fire hazard.
