Families used to gather around the table at meal times and talked to each other, these days its more like eating in front of the TV with your smart phone in one hand fork in the other. In a modern world with so much going on not a lot of people 'set the table' any more. So we thought we would give you a reminder.

The way that you set your table all depends on the purpose of the meal we will be giving tips for a formal dining experience.

Firstly, you then need to make sure that you have everything that you will need. This includes;

  • Placemats

  • Plates

  • Napkins

  • Forks

  • Knives

  • Spoons

  • Cups

If you are having a formal dinner, the first thing to do is to lay the placemats. They need to all be matching for each guest and placed in front of each guests chair. Next, you need to lay the napkin on the left side of the placemat, it should be folded in halves or fourths. For the real formal effect use cloth napkins. You should then place the plates in the centre of the placemats.

Cutlery placement for a formal dinner table should include the dinner fork and salad fork on the napkin that has already been placed. A useful way to remember which way around the cutlery should go is by remembering that you eat from the outside in. The knife(s) go on the right side of the plate, again, remembering your guests eat from the outside in. The knifes cutting edge should be facing the plate. Spoons should then go to the right of the knifes and if there is soup for starter then this should go to the right of the teaspoon. Finally the wine glass should go on the top right corner of each placement.

Most importantly, relax and enjoy your evening, if you need any more information the please get in touch with Ship It Appliances.
