Olive Oil Crisis – Alternatives

Posted by Ship It Appliances Ltd on 24th Jun 2015

In many kitchens across the United Kingdom, olive oil is a key ingredient. It’s always there, it’s versatile, it’s reliable. You pick it up from the grocery store every few weeks without really thinking about it – but, what would happen if there were no more olive oil? With a global shortage on the horizon, this is a very distinct possibility – so, it’s best to get prepared. Here are a few alternatives:

Coconut Oil

For years now, health nuts have been touting coconut as a miracle ingredient. It offers up a wide range of health benefits, and it can be used as an alternative to olive oil when cooking. However, if you are using it to fry any sort of savoury dish, be aware that you will be able to taste a bit of coconut in your meal. Coconut oil is also a great alternative to olive oil and butter when baking. It provides the same flaky consistency for pastries and adds a tiny bit of sweetness to your dishes.

Flaxseed Oil

If you use olive oil for salad dressing or bread dipping, flaxseed oil is a good alternative. It has a distinct nutty flavour that is a great complement for savoury dishes. It brings out the flavour of vegetables while adding its own unique taste that isn’t too overpowering. Flaxseed oil is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for your heart.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is another healthy alternative to olive oil. It has plenty of vitamin E and other antioxidants.Unrefined avocado oil has a very nutty and fruity taste whereas refined avocado oil has less of a distinct flavour and a very high smoke point (which is ideal for deep frying).

If you really can’t picture yourself cooking with anything other than olive oil, it is best to stock up now. Head out to your local grocery store and pick up a few bottles. It is quite long-lasting, so you won’t need more than 3 to get you through the next year or so.
