Regular Cleanings Are Key

Be sure to clean your counters and refrigerators regularly. They should get a thorough scrubbing at least once a week. Your kitchen sink should be cleaned with bleach daily to keep it free from harmful bacteria.

Care for your Cutting Board

Keep two separate cutting boards: one for your meat, and one for your fruit and vegetables. If you are using different types of meat in one dish, wash the board between cutting each type.

There are no hard and fast rules about replacing your cutting board. However, when your current board starts developing deep grooves that are difficult to clean, it is time to get a replacement.

Look After Your Leftovers

If you have leftovers, be sure to refrigerate them within two hours of serving the meal. When reheating the meal the next day, reheat it to at least 73 degrees Celsius to ensure that all bacteria is eliminated. If you still have leftovers after three days, toss them.

Replace Rags and Sponges Regularly

When using sponges and rags to clean your dishes and kitchen surfaces, be sure to clean them regularly; you can even put them in the dishwasher keep them clean. When they start to look ragged, then replace them. Also, be sure use different sponges for different purposes. For example, do not use the same item to clean the counter and the dishes. If you use it to clean up a raw egg or anything that has had raw chicken on it, it is probably best to throw it out.
